Teens in Action
Service Opportunities

Parent Volunteers are needed to assist with the following Teens in Action activities:

  1. Help with supervising the Teen Driving Safety Activities. Parent Mentors are needed to help with exhibits, activities and chaperoning of events. 
  2. Parents are needed to chaperone service learning road trips.  Trips are scheduled one weekends beginning at 5 PM and return is at 5 PM on Sundays.  Requires background check. 
  3. Parents are needed to mentor teen service projects. Teens In Action are on teams and need adult mentors to help them with planning and implementation.

Student Service Activities

STUDENTS AND Seniors looking for service projects are invited to participate in the following activities and to plan a portion of the project:    

  • Teens helping Kids Project:   Help design and implement an afterschool program using Camp Fire USA curriculums to increase academic learning for children in a Local Homeless Shelter.  One afternoon per week for 2 hours.  Must be able to provide your own transportation.    
  • After school recreation program. Plan and implement a program for youth in community who do not have after-school activities.  Host site will be Berkshire Elementary School and other school sites in the area.  Parents are needed to transport student. Or students must provide transportation.     
  • CF 66 Service Learning Road Trips PLANNERS  Teens needed to plan two night 3 day service learning road trips for other teens.  Trips will be created around a theme with the assistance of a staff assistant. Planning and implementation time is approximately 50 hours including the trip.  Planners should have participated in one of Camp Fire USA's Teens in Action Overnight programs prior to being a CF 66 planner.  Preferred are CF 66 trip participants.     
  • CF 66 Service Learning Road Trip Participants:  Participate in a student lead service learning road trip.  These trips go from Friday at 5 PM to Sunday at 5 and students complete approximately 16-20 hours of service, 10 hours of team building and leadership and hours and hours of fun and friendship.

Service Learning Projects

  • Teen CERT Training January 18-20th Martin Luther King Weekend.  Training that prepares youth to know what to do and how to help in an emergency. Courses offered in collaboration with Prince Georges Office Of Emergency Management. To be conducted at the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute in College Park.   Registration by email to CampFirePatuxent@aol.com Youth will learn hands on skills that will help them help others. Parents Volunteer also needed..
  • Project Ignition Year 2- Regional Teen Driving Safety Forum to be held 26 April 2008. Help to develop a this summit for Teen Driving Safety. Opportunities to educate others on the importance of Teen Driving Safety, Parents Volunteer also needed  We need everyones help.
  • Children's Program at United Communities Against Poverty September through May --Help with a weekly after school program for children in the UCAP Shelter. Teens will work directly with children teaching them skills that help them to develop confidence. Training will be held in September and October.  Parents Volunteer also needed  Training for these positions will begin in the Spring.. We will also be hosting a one week summer day camp. Adult and teen counselors and Aides are needed.
  • National Youth Service Day Project--March-April 2008 Help to educate the community on Disaster and Emergency Readiness. Safety Fair at the Summit opened to all students who need service hours.
  • Project Cookie--We will have another Project Cookie event to send cookies to those in need. This will be held during the year. Announcements will be made for days to bring in Cookies. Check the TIA Calendar.  To be held in January.
  • Veterans History Project--Help take oral and written history's from veterans of all wars.  Training will be provided.  This is a great way to support your service learning for those of you in World and US History courses.
  • MLK Days of Service and the Channel 4 Health Fair--January 12 and 13 2008- Help to plan an exhibit and presentation on a Health issue that educates the community.  Spend the weekend in Washington DC and help with the Exhibit at the Washington Convention Center

Leadership Opportunities--Summer and 2007-8 School Year

  • Leadership Training: Points of Light Youth Leadership training will be held during the year. There will be a level one and level two sessions. This is open to all Teens who will be in grades 10-12 during the 2007-8 School year. Students who have participated in the previous year program may apply for level two programs. Applications will be available from Mrs. Wockley in the Main Office or from Mrs. Pezzuto.  This training includes a one year service project that is designed by the participants and meets the requirement for service hours. In addition, these students will have opportunities to work on Project Ignition and Emergency Readiness. Fee for lodging, food, materials and transportation for off site visits.  Contact Mrs. Pezzuto at campfirepatuxent@aol.com if you are interested in any of these opportunities.
  • Internships with Local businesses or Legislators--We are currently working on establishing internships with legislators and businesses. If you are interested, please contact Mrs. Pezzuto
