Bishop McNamara Teens in Action Named as Finalists posted January 25

On January 14, 2008 great news filled the walls of Bishop McNamara High School in Forestville Md. Youth in our Camp Fire USA Teens in Action program were notified that they were selected as finalists in the State Farm Insurance Project Ignition Program. This selection included a $5000 grant to allow students to attend the National Youth Leadership Conference in Minneapolis Minnesota from April 9 to 13. The students will go to Minneapolis and compete with 10 other schools to become the Best of the Best. The students are fundraising to raise the extra money necessary to send all student on the trip.

During the past two years the students have created a website, developed and presented 2 plays on teen driving safety, hosted programs for younger children including school based activities and bike rodeos, educated their friends, reached out to youth who were touched by auto accidents, created fliers and conducted crash reinactments. Additonally, teens in the program have participated in the Teen CERT emergency readiness program to provide them skills in emergency management, disaster readiness, and community response.

During the next few months, the students will be continuing a variety of different activities in support of Driving Safety. These will be posted on the Bishop McNamara High School website. Of note it the Regional Teen Driving Safety Forum that will be hosted by our students. This forum came about as the result of the recent rash of teen driving accidents and deaths, This is a major event for the students in that they will be working with students from other schools to promote teen driving safety. The students are inviting speakers from local agencies, will have testimonials about driving safely, and will lead discussions on a variety of topics around driving safety and creating a positive driving safety program. The Forum will be held on April 26, 2008 at BMHS. The students are looking for alumni and parents to assist them with the conference. They are looking for business sponsors and exhibitors to help them create a positive program for the students.
