Long time teacher, counselor and friend Mrs. Eugenia "Toni" Millner Dies

January 23, 2006

Toni MillnerOn Friday, January 20th, 2006 the Bishop McNamara community lost a loved and respected educator from our community. Mrs. Toni Millner began working at Bishop McNamara in 1992 when Bishop McNamara and LaReine High Schools came together as a coeducational school. Mrs. Millner had served as a guidance counselor at LaReine from 1990-1992 following a successful and varied career in Catholic education that began in 1983.

A graduate herself of Elizabeth Seton High School in Bladensburg, Mrs. Millner went on to complete her B.A. in Sociology from Livingstone College in North Carolina and later completed her M.Ed. in Guidance and Counselling from Bowie State University. From 1983 - 1988 Mrs. Millner was a teacher at St. Philip's School in Camp Springs and St. Francis Xavier in Washington, DC. In 1988 she became a counselor at the Academy of Notre Dame in Washington, DC. From 1989-1990 Mrs. Millner served as Principal of St. Martin's School in Washington, DC before becoming a counselor at LaReine High School in Suitland, MD in 1990.

As a counselor at Bishop McNamara Mrs. Millner is credited with instituting the annual "Honors Coffees" to recognize the accomplishments of our students. A believer in young people, Mrs. Millner cared a tremendous amount about the success and character development of her students. Mrs. Millner continued her work in the Guidance Office at Bishop McNamara by developing the curriculum for Advanced Skills Workshop, a one semester course developed specifically to build success skills into our students.

Mrs. Millner first became ill last spring and courageously battled her illnesses since that time. Although she will be missed dearly, we know today she is in a much better and glorious place! Attached is the death notice for Mrs. Millner from the Washington Post, Monday, January 23, 2006. A Catholic Mass and Funeral will be held for Mrs. Millner on Wednesday, January 25th at 11:00 am at Mt. Calvary Catholic Church on Forestville. Bishop McNamara High School will close on Wednesday to allow faculty, staff and students the opportunity to recognize the legacy of our beloved friend.
