When should a student see a counselor?
Anytime a student needs help from a professionally trained counselor who can help him/her look objectively at a problem—whether educational, career, personal or social, big or small, present or future.
Some questions which might arise are:
- What subjects should I take to prepare myself properly to achieve my goals?
- How can I perform better in class?
- How can I make friends more easily?
- Where should I go to college?
- How can I best improve my family relationships?
Many times we benefit from another person’s point of view on a difficult situation—perhaps a respected friend, teacher or parent, but sometimes a student needs special information, knowledge or professional skills. It is these types of situations that one should seek the aid of a counselor
A counselor can help a student look more directly at things which are troubling and suggest alternatives. In short, counseling works around one’s particular needs and problems to assist in appropriate decision making. Of course all information is completely confidential.
